This may seem like an ambiguous topic, but through my education, and my health journey I can help to define what it means to live holistically. I want to share how I live a holistic life, and take care of myself, and encourage others to find what’s important and feels good to them. When you are well balanced, you are allowing life to flow through you.
To live a holistic life is to look at each part of your being; mind, body, and spirit/soul, and see how they come together and work as a whole. It is our jobs to keep each part functioning properly to achieve health in each area. To take care of yourself holistically is to be mindful of how you are treating yourself; mentally, physically and spiritually. It requires looking inward and listening to what your body is saying. The beautiful thing about holistic health is that it is uniquely individual to you. So what works best for you, and your body type would not work as well for someone else. When all parts of yourself are functioning properly, you are able to live a more balanced life. You can be in better control of your health, the natural way. Healing is possible, and living a holistic life lets you take the reigns of your journey into your own hands.
What it Means To Live A Holistic Life
Holistic health is about looking at your the three areas of health (mind, body & spirit) and healing yourself through natural means. Healing comes in many forms including aromatherapy, herbal medicine, homeopathic medicine, nutrition, and Reiki. These methods work to heal each part of the body, and by keeping them balanced allows us to live with optimum health. What is interesting about holistic health is that by taking care of one area of your health, it will usually require you to care for all areas. That being said, by improving one area, it can also be simultaneous that you improve other areas.
Ways That You Can Live More Holistically
One of the biggest impacts we can have on the health of our physical body is through our nutrition. We can see suggestions on diets, and ways to treat our bodies everywhere nowadays. But holistic nutrition is a diet that consists of natural and whole foods. Some foods that you can incorporate into your diet are dark, and leafy green veggies, berries, nuts like almonds, grains, and yes… even carbs-but think healthy life flax, multigrain. You see, what media says about carbs and fact isn’t completely correct… they actually work to sustain your body’s energy throughout the day, and keep your body satisfied- so cutting them out completely may not be the best idea. Having a “cleaner” diet is important for keeping the body functioning properly, so this means limiting sugars, alcohols, caffeine, and nicotine.
Another way you can live a more holistic lifestyle is through incorporating natural medicines. Some examples of natural medicines would be herbal medicines, essential oils, and homeopathic medicines. These types of medicines can affect every aspect of the being as a whole. Methods such as herbal medicine and essential oils help to go to the root of the problem, instead of taking care of the symptoms. Some ways you can incorporate this healing method into your life is using lavender essential oil when you feel stressed. You can put a few drops in a diffuser, add a few drops to your bath, sprinkle a few drops on your bed sheets at night, and even put some on your skin- just make sure to always apply with a carrier oil like coconut oil; as some oils are toxic to the touch and can burn your skin. You can also incorporate herbal remedies such as tea. This is one of my favorite things to do! Herbs contain healing properties called active constituents. These ingredients are not only medicinal for the body but also incredibly nourishing!!
One more way that you can incorporate a more holistic lifestyle is by doing things that make YOU feel good. You see, anything that fuels your inner fire is not only good for your mental health but also your spiritual health. For me, I love to paint, sing and play the piano. There will be times that I am going through a really difficult time, and I will sit down with my paintbrush and by the time I’m done, I feel like a weight has been lifted. That’s the feeling of improved emotional, and spiritual health. But it doesn’t have to be art, it can be writing, poetry, music, baking…. it can be anything that makes you happier, and feel better when done. This area of health is often looked over in our society, but if you can make the time, it is well worth it, and you will see yourself bloom.
If you are interested in living a more holistic life, then it might be serendipitous that you’ve seen this post. Always listen to your body, and do what feels right. It is important to remember that with anything, make sure to do proper research (and consider the source). By balancing mind, body, and spirit you can live a more prosperous and healthy life. By healing ourselves, we can heal the world around us.
