As a new mama, you’re going to need to devote time to rest and recovery. This is an adjustment for the whole family and your role as a caregiver is brand new.

Trying to go back to your previous routine and sacrifice your own needs will lead to burnout. During this challenging and exciting time, it’s important to prioritize better rest for you and your partner so you both can keep going. The responsibilities will seem intense, but making sure the baby duties are split fairly between you two and you are both there for each other, you will get through.

Forget about what needs to get done around the house. It can wait, hun.

Self-care is number one! You don’t need to be the perfect host when everyone is all ready to see your sweet baby. You may just need a nap way more – and that’s totally okay!

Here are some ways to get sacred & rejuvenating rest:

  • Have a nightly routine that you treasure (warm compresses, a relaxing bath, reading a book, journaling). It will help you unwind, soothe & process emotions

  • Put your phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’ while you sleep and limit screen time right before bed – the blue light will make it harder to fall asleep

  • Mindfulness practices will regulate you & your baby – try a mindful parenting practice to support parent-infant relationships (there are online programs that will teach techniques & help you lower stress)

  • Get fresh air, Vitamin D & move your body – essential to mental health

  • Connect with folks so you don’t feel like you’re in this alone – family, friends, support groups will bring a sense of belonging & you can openly share the joys and challenges of it all

  • Practice sleeping when your baby does & consider infant sleep training

  • Do something you enjoy that will help you feel grounded during the day

  • Hire a postpartum doula even if it’s just a couple days a week – accept & receive help
